Out of mum’s house: 9:05am

My wife and I were talking this morning before my little girl came out of mum’s house. On Sunday (the 16th November) my wife saw my little girl where she works. My little girl shot her a secret wave and then put her head down.

My wife asked if we should speak to my little girl about it and why she always put’s her head down after waving or say hello to her where she works. I tend to stay away from talking about things like that as I don’t want to put pressure on my little girl to talk negatively about her mum. However I thought we could speak about it and see where it goes.

We asked my little girl why she waved yesterday and then put her head down and did she feel uncomfortable. She said she did and she seemed to be talking okay so we continued.

‘Why did you feel uncomfortable’, I asked.

She said ‘I don’t know’.

‘If you don’t feel comfortable, you must know why you don’t feel comfortable’, I asked.

She said ‘Because mummy will give me into trouble’.

‘How does that make you feel’, I asked.

‘Not good’, she said.

I asked ‘What do you think should happen’.

‘I should be able to speak to [my wife / her stepmum] if I want to’, she said.

We then got to school. I spoke to her and said to her that we both loved her and no matter what happens that will never change even if she doesn’t get to speak to us. We know she loves us and she should know that we love her.

It makes me feel very sad that she has to feel that and that her mum feels quite happy to make sure that she knows she shouldn’t be speaking to us. That’s great parenting for you!
